I called him after having bouts of serious pain in my lower back and he got me in for an assessment the following business day. He spent so much time learning about my medical history and really working to understand my complaints. I have now been seeing him for 8 weeks and my back has NEVER felt better. His staff, Diana, Sara and Kelly are are WONDERFUL. They literally brighten up my day"

This is one entry in the March ARLINGTON SHOPPER:
Q: Dear Dr. Archambault,
My boyfriend has a BAD habit!! He's constantly cracking his neck! He grabs his head, jerks it, and his neck makes a popping sound. At first, I thought it was a little funny but when he kept it up it became annoying, especially when we're out with friends. I've asked him to stop but he says his neck gets stiff and this makes it feel better. Now I'm worried that it's not a good thing to do and could hurt him. Anything you know about this would be helpful. -Darlene F., Belmont
Hello Darlene,
This is a question I'm often asked by concerned parents, friends, etc. Your boyfriend's "habit" is more common than you think and could have serious consequences if it results in ligament instability, vertebral spur development and other potentially harmful spinal problems. Let me begin by saying that the occasional "cracking" of one's spine associated with twisting one's back or neck, stretching, or getting out of bed in the morning is nothing to worry about. In fact, it may simply indicate that the joints involved have gone through a full range of motion and may actually be beneficial in assuring a healthy, functioning joint.
The problem occurs when an indiscriminate force is applied to the spine to achieve this "crack", most commonly by one's hands. This practice can have many detrimental results, including joint hypermobility and ligament laxity (the joint becomes "loose", creating misalignment) this may lead to early arthritic and degenerative changes to the spine, causing spurs to develop on the spine and possible neurological involvement.
If your boyfriend needs to "crack" his neck, he best seek a professional evaluation to determine the reason for his discomfort. I would strongly advise a chiropractic consultation. It's likely he will no longer feel the need for this habit when the source of the problem is addressed!
